Hillsboro, Ore.- George Fox University has claimed the title in the race for the Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy for the second year after finishing the spring season with 242 points.
The Bruins were Northwest Conference champions in men’s tennis, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s track & field. They also tied for second in softball, placed third in women’s tennis, and seventh in baseball and men’s golf. The Bruins earned a 20-point edge over the Pirates for the top spot. Whitworth finished second in women’s golf and men’s and women’s track & field. The Pirates were third in men’s golf, fourth in softball, tied for fourth in women’s lacrosse, finished fifth in men’s and women’s tennis, and ninth in baseball to give them 222 points for second place.
Pacific Lutheran earned the third place spot with 215 points. The Lutes finished tied for second in softball and third in women’s golf, women’s rowing, and men’s and women’s track & field. The Lutes were fifth in women’s golf, sixth in baseball, eighth in women’s tennis, and ninth in men’s tennis. Puget Sound landed in fourth with 194 points, while Linfield placed fifth with 190 points. The Loggers were second in women’s rowing. The Wildcats were NWC champions in softball and finished second in women’s tennis.
Whitman finished sixth with 189 points, followed by Pacific (Ore.) with 171 points, Willamette with 170 points and Lewis & Clark with 165. The Blues were NWC champions in women’s tennis, finished second in men’s golf, and tied for second in women’s lacrosse. The Boxers were NWC champions in baseball and finished second in men’s tennis. The Bearcats were NWC champions in men’s golf and tied for second in both baseball and women’s lacrosse. The Pioneers captured the NWC crown in women’s rowing and finished tied for second in baseball.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
