Hillsboro, Ore. - Whitworth University closed out the 2016-17 academic year with its 10th consecutive Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy.
The Pirates earned an NWC championship title in women's cross country, men's soccer women's volleyball and softball for a total of 251 points. Whitworth also had strong second-place finishes in football, men's basketball, men's track & field and women's track & field to add to the overall point total.
Pacific Lutheran University lands in the second-place spot again with 226 points. The Lutes captured NWC Conference titles in women's soccer, men's golf and women's rowing, while finishing second in men's cross country, women's volleyball, men's swimming and women's swimming. Linfield repeats with a third-place finish in the standings with 218 points. The Wildcats added conference titles to the record books in the sports of football, baseball and women's tennis.
George Fox jumps from a sixth-place finish last year to fourth-place in 2017 with 190 points, edging Whitman (189 pts.) The Bruins ended the year on a high-note with four NWC titles in women's golf, women's lacrosse, men's track & field and women's track & field. The Blues also took the top spot in four sports in 2016-17, adding trophies in men's basketball, men's swimming, women's swimming and men's tennis. The University of Puget Sound lands in the number six spot with 180 points and a NWC title in women's basketball. The Loggers were runners-up in women's soccer and women's rowing.
Pacific (Ore.) University (164 pts.), Willamette (161 pts.) and Lewis & Clark College (157 pts.) round out the final spots in the McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy standings. Willamette took the NWC crown in men’s cross country and finished second in baseball and men's golf, while Pacific was second in men's soccer and Lewis & Clark finished second in men's tennis.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
