SEATTLE, Wash. - Whitworth University closed out the 2011-12
academic year with its fifth consecutive Northwest Conference
McIlroy-Lewis All Sports trophy.
The Pirates earned a NWC championship in men's track & field
and a share of the NWC baseball title for a total 259 points
through extending its lead from 23 to 54 points.
Linfield used three spring NWC championships in women's tennis,
softball, and men's golf to propel from fifth place through the
winter to second place in the final standings with 205 points.
Pacific Lutheran stayed in third place with 184 points, followed
by Puget Sound (179), which just edged out Willamette (177).
Whitman College (167) was in sixth following a NWC championship
in men's tennis and a share of the women's golf title. Pacific
University was seventh with 161 points, which includes a share of
the NWC baseball title. George Fox (137) was in eighth place
after a share of the women's golf title and a NWC women's track
& field championships. Lewis & Clark College (131)
finished in ninth place.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic
excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all
fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the
baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics
director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy,
Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical
education professor from 1950- 82 who also coached field hockey
(1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
