SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University rolled to a 53-point
margin of victory to claim its fourth consecutive Northwest
Conference McIlroy-Lewis All Sports trophy following
the spring sports season of the 2010-11 academic
year.
Whitworth finished with 267 points after scoring 115 points in
the spring season. The Pirates won NWC titles in women's
tennis and men's track & field and added five other third place
finishes during the spring. Whitworth finished with a total
of seven conference titles in 2010-11 and had the highest total
score in each of the three academic seasons.
Thanks to three NWC titles in the spring, Linfield College
scored 114 points this season to vault from fifth place to second
place in the final standings with a total of 214 points. The
Wildcats won championships in baseball, softball and men's
golf.
The University of Puget Sound finished in third place with 194
points.
George Fox University won a pair of NWC crowns in the spring,
claiming championships in women's golf and women's track &
Field. Whitman College won the NWC championship in men's
tennis.
Pacific Lutheran University and Willamette University tied for
fourth place with 165 points each. Whitman was close behind,
finishing sixth with 161 points. The final three spots were
closely bunched. Pacific University (148) was seventh,
followed by George Fox (144) and Lewis & Clark College
(142).
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic
excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all
fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the
baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics
director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy,
Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical
education professor from 1950- 82 who also coached field hockey
(1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
