Hillsboro, Ore. - Whitworth University closed out the 2015-16 academic year with its ninth consecutive Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy.
The Pirates earned an NWC championship title in baseball, men's golf, softball, men's track & field and women's track & field for a total of 278 points.
Pacific Lutheran University moves up a spot from the winter standings to finish second on the year with 213 points. The Lutes captured the NWC Women’s Rowing Conference title, while finishing the season second in baseball, third in men’s golf and added the NWC Tournament title in baseball to the record books. Linfield jumps from sixth place to third in the standings with 205 points. The Wildcats finished tied for second in softball and third in women’s tennis and both men’s and women’s track & field, while also earning an NWC tournament title in softball.
The University of Puget Sound lands in the number four spot with 200 points and a third-place finish in women’s rowing. Willamette University finishes in fifth place with 180 points, edging George Fox University (179 pts.) The Bearcats finished second in men’s golf and fourth in both women’s rowing and women’s track & field. The Bruins took home the NWC Conference women’s golf title and were NWC co-champions in women’s lacrosse.
Whitman College (174 pts.), Pacific (Ore.) University (168 pts.) and Lewis & Clark College (149 pts.) round out the final spots in the McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy standings. Whitman earned an NWC men’s tennis title, while Pacific (Ore.) was an NWC co-champion in women’s lacrosse and Lewis & Clark took the NWC crown in women’s tennis.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
