Hillsboro, Ore. - Whitworth University closed out the 2017-18 academic year with its 11th consecutive Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy.
The Pirates earned an NWC championship titles in women's cross country and men's swimming for a total of 241 points. Whitworth also had strong second-place finishes in football, women's volleyball, men's basketball, men's golf and women's track & field and also tied for second in football and women's soccer to add to the overall point total.
Pacific Lutheran University lands in the second-place spot with 227 points and captured six NWC titles this year. The Lutes were NWC co-champions in men's soccer and earned NWC crowns outright in women's soccer, women's volleyball, baseball, men's golf and women's rowing. George Fox jumps up one spot from fourth-place a year ago to third place in 2018 with 212 points. The Bruins also captured six NWC trophies this year in women's basketball, women's lacrosse, men's track & field, women's track & field and were co-champions in both women's golf and softball.
Linfield College edged Whitman College for the fourth spot with 207 points. The Wildcats took home the NWC title in football, women's tennis and were co-champions in softball. Whitman lands in the fifth spot (202 pts), adding an NWC championship trophy to the Blues' record books in men's basketball, women's swimming, men's tennis and co-champions in women's golf. The University of Puget Sound finished sixth with with 189 points. The Loggers were second in women's rowing, co-runners-up in women's soccer and third in women's cross country.
Willamette University (166 pts.), Pacific (Ore.) University (147 pts.) and Lewis & Clark College (145 pts.) round out the final spots in the McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy standings. Willamette earned NWC titles in men's cross country and were co-champions in men's soccer, while Pacific was third in women's volleyball and Lewis & Clark finished third in men's cross country and women's rowing.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
