Hillsboro, Ore. - Whitworth University finished the 2018-19 academic year with its 12th consecutive Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy.
Whitworth earned Northwest Conference titles in football and baseball, as well as an NWC Championship title in men’s swimming. The Pirates also earned second-place finishes in women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s basketball, softball, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s track & field to add to their point total.
George Fox finished second with 220 total points, earning NWC Championship titles in men’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s and women’s track & field, as well as a conference title in women’s lacrosse. The Bruins also enjoyed a second-place finish in men’s tennis, and third-place finishes in men’s golf, softball, and football.
Pacific Lutheran earned the third-place spot with 210 total points. The Lutes took home the NWC title in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and earned NWC Championship titles in men’s cross country and women’s rowing. Puget Sound and Whitman each place fourth with 198 points. The Loggers earned the NWC title in women’s soccer and raced to a second-place finish in women’s rowing. The Blues enjoyed five conference titles, including a regular-season title in men’s soccer and NWC Championship titles in women’s swimming, men’s basketball, women’s golf, and men’s tennis. The Blues also enjoyed second-place finishes in women’s basketball, baseball, and women’s tennis.
Linfield finishes sixth overall in final standings with 193 total points. The Wildcats earned NWC Championship titles in women’s tennis and softball, and recorded second-place finishes in football, men’s and women’s swimming, and women’s lacrosse.
Willamette (171 points), Pacific (Ore.) (170 points), and Lewis & Clark (124 points) round out the 2019 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy standings. Willamette edged Pacific (Ore.) by one point, recording NWC Championship titles in women’s cross country and men’s golf. Pacific (Ore.) finished second overall in baseball and third in volleyball, football, softball, men’s tennis, and men’s track & field. Lewis & Clark raced to a third-place showing at the NWC Women’s Rowing Championship in addition to third-place finishes in men’s and women’s tennis and women’s golf.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
