2000 NWC Baseball Student-Athletes of the Week
May 8-14
Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Alvis (George Fox, Sr., Seattle, WA) set two new Bruin records by winning his 11th game of the season (improving to 11-2) with a two-hit, complete-game 5-1 win over Whitworth. He struck out 10 batters to establish a new season record of 85. His 11 wins breaks the old record of 10 set by Nate Barnett in 1997.
Honorable Mention: Rob Schlegel (Linfield) allowed 13 hits and five earned runs in a complete-game win over PLU. He struck out 7 and improved to 9-2.
Hitter of the Week: Derek Birley (George Fox, Sr., C, Battle Ground, WA) tied an NCAA III record when he hit four home runs in a 13-9 win over Whitworth. For the weekend he was 6/11 with 11 rbi's and six runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Paul Duman (Willamette) went 6/10 with four runs scored and an rbi; Greg Roberts (Linfield) was 5/5 with a double and three rbi's.
May 1-7
Pitcher of the Week: Kess Romano (George Fox, Sr., Vancouver, WA) set a new school record for career wins (25) by going 2-0 last week. In a pair of complete games he allowed seven hits, one run (0 earned) and struck out nine batters.
Honorable Mention: Nik Lubisich (Willamette) threw his seventh straight complete game by defeating L&C 9-0 and allowing only three hits while striking out nine batters; Jason Andrew (PLU) shut out Whitworth 2-0, allowing six hits and striking out 12 batters; Matt Squires (Whitworth) defeated PLU 2-1, allowing only three hits, stiking out six batters; Brett Hartlaub (Linfield) allowed two hits and gave up one earned run in seven innings; Jimmy Hill (Whitman) picked up a win in relief Thursday at L&C (0 runs in 2.1 innings) before coming back to lose a complete game effort Saturday vs. George Fox on one day's rest (allowing 4 runs - 3 earned).
Hitter of the Week: Nik Lubisich (Willamette, Jr., West Linn, OR) sparked a three-game sweep of L&C by going 6/12 with a double, triple, two home runs, six runs scored and four rbi's. He tied the school record for triples in a season with five.
Honorable Mention: Aaron Bliss (George Fox) went 11/23 in six games, driving in seven runs and scoring five; Kevin Schjei (Linfield) went 5/9 with four rbi's and two runs scored in three games; Justin McKitterick (Whitworth) went 5/11 with two rbi in three games and established a new school record for sacrifice bunts in a season with 11; Mac Strang (Pacific) went 4/9 with a home run in three games; Adam Zaitz (Whitman) went 9/19 in five games, including four doubles, a home run, seven rbi's and five runs scored.
April 24-30
Pitcher of the Week: Jason Andrew (PLU, So., Tacoma, WA) threw a two-hit shut out at L&C, striking out a career high 16 batters.
Honorable Mention: Brandon Croy (Pacific) shut out Whitman, allowing six hits and striking out four; Nik Lubisich (Willamette) went the distance in a 8-1 win over Whitworth, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out seven; Chris Carnahan (Linfield) went 6.1 innings in the 13-2 win at UPS, allowing only four hits and one earned run, while striking out five.
Hitter of the Week: Luke Atwood (Willamette, So., IF, Keizer, OR) went 9/14 in three games, scoring five times and driving in one run.
Honorable Mention: Matt Whitten (PLU) went 5/9 with five rbi's; Kyle Carothers (Whitman) went 6/13 with three doubles, two runs scored and an rbi; Brian Mullaly (L&C) went 4/8 with a home run, a double, two rbi's and a run scored; Chuck Banta (Linfield) went 4/10 with a double, home run and two rbi's; Cameron Milton (Pacific) went 4/7 with a home run and two rbi's.
April 17-22
Pitcher of the Week: Kelly DeVoy (Pacific, Jr., Eureka, Calif.) defeated first-place George Fox 5-2 with a nine-inning, complete-game effort. He allowed six hits and struck out four.
Honorable Mention: Rob Schlegel (Linfield) went all seven innings in a 4-1 win over Whitman, striking out nine; Brad Ferrin (Willamette) went the distance in a 6-3 win over PLU, allowing one earned run and six hits; Brian Mullaly (L&C) won two games in relief, allowing only one hit in 3.2 innings.
Hitter of the Week: Rob Broberg (L&C, Jr., 1B, Scappoose, Ore.) went 6/15 with seven rbi's, 3 runs scored, two doubles and a home run, to lead the Pioneers to three wins in four games.
Honorable Mention: Ryan Hazelbaker (Willamette) set a school record with his 167th career hit in 3rd game vs. PLU. He finished with four hits for 170 and counting; Chuck Banta (Linfield) went 5/8 with two doubles and three rbi's; Ryan Hughes (Willamette) went 5/9 with four rbi's and five runs scored.
April 10-16
Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Toivola (Whitman, So., P, Inglemoor, WA) shut out Willamette 2-0 with a complete-game 4-hitter, striking out four batters.
Honorable Mention: Brett Hartlaub (Linfield) went the first seven innings of a 7-0 win at Whitworth, allowing only 1 hit and striking out a career-high 11 batters; Ryan Alvis (George Fox) threw a 7-inning complete game in a 2-1 win at PLU, striking out nine; Corey Long (L&C) picked up a win in relief, allowing no runs and three hits in 3.2 innings.
Hitter of the Week: Kevin Hill (Linfield, Sr., SS, Beaverton, OR) went 6/9 with two home runs and six rbi's and three runs scored in three games (two wins).
Honorable Mention: Rob Broberg (L&C, 1B/DH) went 6/8 with two doubles, 4 rbi's, and five runs scored in two wins; Nick Schuerman (Whitworth, C) went 4/9 with 2 home runs, 3 rbis, 3 runs scored.
April 3-9
Pitcher of the Week: Brad Ferrin (Willamette, Jr., Salem, OR) shut out 13th-ranked George Fox 4-0, striking out four and walking two. It was the first shut out of the Bruins in two years.
Honorable Mention: Rob Schlegel (Linfield) threw a complete-game shut out of L&C, striking out a season-high 11 batters; Kess Romano (George Fox) went the distance in a 14-1 win over Willamette; Jeff Halstead (UPS) went all the way in a 2-1 win at Whitman, striking out eight.
Hitter of the Week: Scott Biglin (Whitworth, So., OF, Pasco, WA) batted .750 (6/8) with a double, three home runs six rbi's and five runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Matt Lengwenus (Pacific) went 6/10 with two home runs, including the game winner Sunday at Whitworth, and four rbi's; Rob Broberg (L&C, Util.) went 7/16 in four games, scoring three runs; Bobby Jones (Whitman, INF) went 6/12 with four doubles, two runs scored and an rbi.
March 26-April 2
Pitcher of the Week: Bill Allen (L&C, So., Eugene, OR) went the distance in a 5-3 win over George Fox, ending the Bruins' 12-game winning streak.
Honorable Mention: Kess Romano (George Fox) went 8 innings, allowing seven hits, in 5-1 win over UPS; Matt Squires (Whitworth) allowed only 3 hits in complete-game 7-1 win over L&C; Brad Ferrin (Willamette) went 7+ innings in 16-3 win over Linfield.
Hitter of the Week: Aaron Keller (Whitworth, So., 3B, Seattle, WA) went 6/10 with four home runs, 10 rbi's and nine runs scored in three games vs. L&C.
Honorable Mention: Garrett Bates (George Fox) went 6/11 with three rbi's vs. UPS; Evan Swanson (Linfield) went 6/14 with two doubles and five rbi's vs. Willamette; Matt Pellegrino (L&C) went 3/9 with two rbi's in two games; Jason Both (PLU) went 6/15 with two home runs and nine rbi's.
March 20-26
Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Alvis (George Fox, Sr., Seattle, WA) won two games last week. He allowed one run in three innings at Menlo and went the distance in a 6-2 win over L&C. He struck out twelve in the week.
Honorable Mention: Ryan Toivola (Whitman) shut out Whitworth 1-0 in a seven-inning game, allowing only three hits.
Hitter of the Week: Derek Birley (George Fox, Sr., C, Battle Ground, WA) went 8/16 in the Bruins' 4-1 week, with three home runs, eight rbi's and six runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Andy Tillo (Whitman) went 3/7 with three home runs and five runs batted in in two games vs. Whitworth.
March 13-19
Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Johnson (UPS, Sr., P, Salem, Ore.) shut out Whitworth 3-0, allowing only five hits and walking none.
Honorable Mention: Zach Almont (PLU) gave up only a first-inning sac fly to CLU in a 12-inning tie, striking out 12 and going the whole way; Nik Lubisich (Willamette) shut out CWU 3-0 on a 10-hitter.
Hitter of the Week: Drew Moore (L&C, Jr., C, Atlanta, GA) went 6/9 with three home runs, 3 rbi's and four runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Lubisich (Willamette) went 9/17 in four games with 1 double and three rbi's; Ryan Keller (UPS) went 6/10 with 3 rbi's and 2 runs.
March 5-12
Pitcher of the Week: Zach Almont (PLU, Jr., Graham, WA) earned a save and win on the same day when he pitched the final two innings (recording six straight outs) of PLU's 5-1 win over Whitman, and went 7.2 innings of the next game, allowing one unearned run in PLU's 8-1 win.
Honorable Mention: Brad Ferrin (Willamette) pitched a seven-inning complete game 1-0 shutout at DII Hawaii Pacific; Ryan Alvis (George Fox) pitched six shutout innings to earn the win in an 8-2 win over Linfield.
Hitter of the Week: Matt Benjamin (Willamette, So., OF, Tillamook, OR) went 9/19 in five games, with 8 runs scored, five rbi's, two doubles and a home run.
Honorable Mention: Derek Birley (George Fox) went 3/5 with 3 rbi's and two runs scored in win over Linfield; Bryan Tull (L&C) hit .700 (7/10) in four games, including two home runs, five rbi's and four runs scored.
