NORTHWEST CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Nov. 13
Offensive Player of the Week: Luke Atwood (Willamette, So., QB, Keizer, OR) on 16 carries ran for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns (70, 2 yards). Also completed 4 of 8 passes for 25 yards and one interception.
Honorable Mention: Damian Putney (Whitworth, RB) ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns, finishing with a new Pirate season rushing record of 1,293 yards; Nick Forsey (Linfield, WR) caught a game-high 13 passes for a career-high 198 yards finishing with a new Linfield career receptions record of 135 catches; Jacob Croft (PLU, RB) ran 10 times for 99 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Week: Sky Blake (Whitworth, Jr., DE, Bothel, WA) recorded six tackles, and two sacks for 8 yards to lead the Pirates to their first shutout since 1985.
Honorable Mention: Tim Lax (PLU, LB) recorded five tackles, including two for losses of 8 yards.
Nov. 6
Offensive Player of the Week: Ardell Bailey (Willamette, Sr., FB, Salem, OR) ran for 138 yards and two TD's on only eight carries, leading a Bearcat effort that finished with 527 rushing yards, the best in the NWC this season. Honorable Mention: Anthony Hicks (PLU, FB) carried 17 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns, caught 2 passes for another 49 yards; Curt Musser (Linfield, QB) passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more, while completing 24 of 39 passes for 326 yards; Ivan Gustafson (Whitworth, TE) caught six passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Week: Doug Edmonson (Whitworth, So., LB, Alta Loma, CA) recorded nine tackles, recovered a fumble and blocked a punt in Pirates' upset at EOU. Honorable Mention: Eric Thomson (Willamette, DE) recorded five tackles, including all three Bearcat sacks for nine yards; Barry Spiering (Linfield, DE) had eight tackles, including a sack for 10 yards, and deflected a pass during Wildcat effort that held UPS to three yards rushing.
Oct. 30
Offensive Player of the Week: Chad Johnson (PLU, Jr., QB, Puyallup, WA) completed 24 of 32 passes for career-best 374 yards with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He also ran the ball 7 times for 23 yards and two more scores in Lutes' 56-23 win over Linfield. Honorable Mention: Anthony Hicks (PLU, FB) carried 17 times for 105 yards, five catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns (81 and 14 yards); Carl Haberberger (Linfield, RB) rushed 23 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns; Josh Yeater (UPS, RB) rushed 19 times for 201 yards and a touchdown in loss at Pomona-Pitzer; Andy Miguel (Will., FL) had 144 yards on 8 carries, 2 touchdowns, and 2 receptions for 19 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week: Kamell Eckroth-Bernard (Willamette, Sr., DB, Eugene, OR) recorded school-record three of Willamette's six interceptions in 31-16 win over Whitworth. Also had two tackles. Honorable Mention: John Eussen (PLU, DL) recorded 8 tackles and a QB sack in win over Linfield; Mike Purdy (Linfield, DB) recorded 10 tackles and broke up two passes; Sky Blake (Whitworth, DE) recorded 8 tackles, including 3 for losses of 13 yards.
Oct. 23
Offensive Player of the Week: Curt Musser (Linfield, QB, Jr., Medford, OR) completed 18 of 30 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Also ran for the winning touchdown vs. EOU with :27 to play. Honorable Mention: Ardell Bailey (Willamette, RB) ran for 135 yards on only nine carries in 41-14 win at UPS; Damian Putney (Whitworth, RB) ran for 191 yards on 30 carries and scored two touchdowns in 41-20 loss at Azusa Pacific; Luke Balash (PLU, RB) gained 133 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns vs. L&C.
Defensive Player of the Week: Russ Hayden (Linfield, LB, Jr., Palm Desert, CA) recorded 18 tackles (8 primary), including a 9-yard sack, to lead a Linfield defense that held EOU 100 yards below its rushing average. Honorable Mention: Tony Cassinerio (Willamette, CB) recorded 11 tackles (10 unassisted) and broke up a pass vs. UPS; Andy Clark (Whitworth, LB) recorded 11 tackles, including a 6-yard sack, vs. APU; Mike Purdy (Linfield, DB) set up the game-winning score vs. EOU with a 19-yard interception return with 2:46 to play and recorded 10 tackles; Brian Fulker (PLU, DE) recorded three tackles, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.
Oct. 16
Offensive Player of the Week: Jeff Halstead (UPS, Sr., WR, Milwaukie, OR) caught eight passes for 151 yards and one touchdown in the Loggers' 26-20 win at L&C. Also returned 3 kickoffs for 107 yards, including a 47-yarder that set up the winning score. Honorable Mention: Chad Johnson (PLU, QB) completed 13 of 22 passes for 162 yards and 1 touchdown vs. Whitworth. Also ran 10 times for 38 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week: Steve Alseth (PLU, DB, Edmonds, WA) intercepted three passes to lead the Lutes' defensive effort against Whitworth. Honorable Mention: Mike Mauss (PLU, LB) recorded six tackles, including two for loss (-14 yards), one sack (-13) and forced a fumble; Kyle Banks (Willamette, FS) recorded 16 tackles and an interception against Eastern Oregon; Mitch Ellerd (Whitworth, LB) recorded 18 tackles against PLU.
Oct. 9
Offensive Player of the Week: Carl Habergerger (Linfield, Jr., TB, Leavenworth, WA) rushed for a season-high 102 yards on 25 carries, and scored two touchdowns in the Wildcats' 31-7 win at Whitworth. Honorable Mention: Tim Blair (Willamette, RB) rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in Bearcats' 29-20 win over PLU; Kyle Brown (PLU, WR) caught five passes for 109 yards and completed another pass for 37 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week: Tony Cassinerio (Willamette, Sr., CB, Gustine, CA) returned an interception 35 yards to set up the winning touchdown vs. PLU, also had four unassisted tackles. Honorable Mention: Sky Blake (Whitworth, DE) led Whitworth with 11 tackles, three for losses of 4 yards, a sack for 8 yards and forced a fumble; Barry Spiering (Linfield, DE) recovered a pair of fumbles that led to Wildcat touchdowns and added a sack (-5), two tackles for losses (-4) and three other tackles.
Oct. 2
Offensive Player of the Week: Curt Musser (Linfield, Jr., QB, Medford, OR) tied a school record with six touchdown passes and completed 20 of 34 passes for 357 yards in the Wildcats' 65-10 win over Lewis & Clark, while playing less than three quarters. Honorable Mention: Josh Parbon (Whitworth, QB) comleted 21 of 25 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns in Pirates; 45-12 win over UPS; Anthony Hicks (PLU, FB) rushed for 133 yards on 16 carries, and caught 6 passes for 65 yards in Lutes' 41-35 win over EOU.
Defensive Player of the Week: Jeremy Johnston (PLU, Sr., LB, Tacoma, WA) made 14 tackles (9 unassisted), including two for losses of four yards.. Honorable Mention: Sky Blake (Whitworth, DE) led Whitworth with seven tackles (including 3 during Pirates' 10-play goal line stand) and forced a fumble; Tim Tacket (Linfield, P) averaged 51.7 yards on three punts, including a school-record 79-yarder.
Sept. 25
Offensive Player of the Week: Anthony Hicks (PLU, Sr., FB, Tumwater, WA) led the Lutes to a 47-23 win over Southern Oregon and also won his showdown with the Raiders' Griff Yates by rushing for 237 yards on 14 carries (8-226 in the second half) and had TD runs of 41, 13 and 19 yards.
Honorable Mention: Damian Putney (Whitworth, Sr., RB) followed up his record setting performance of last week with 114 yards on 33 carries and two touchdowns in the Pirates' 28-3 win over Cal Lutheran; John Nosler (Linfield, Jr., WR) caught 7 passes for 70 yards and scored the go-ahead TD in the Wildcats' win at Menlo.
Defensive Player of the Week: Neal Maddox (Linfield, Sr., Rover, San Jose, CA) scored two touchdowns on blocked punts to lead Linfield to the 28-19 win at Menlo while playing in front of his hometown fans. He added a career high eight tackles (six primary). Note: Linfield has had the defensive player of the week in each of the first three weeks of the season.
Honorable Mention: Doug Edmonson (Whitworth, So., LB) recorded seven primary tackles and intercepted a pass to lead the defensive effort as the Pirates' kept CLU out of the endzone; Aaron Lawson (Willamette, Sr., DE) had four tackles for losses of 24 yards (including three sacks for 20 yards) as the Bearcats held Humboldt St. to 185 total yards; Tim Lax (PLU, Sr., LB) had eight tackles and one pass break up in the Lutes' win.
Sept. 18
Offensive Player of the Week: Damian Putney (Whitworth, Sr., TB, Harrington, WA) recorded the fifth highest rushing total in Northwest small college history and set Whitworth records for carries and yards when he carried 40 times for 303 yards in the Pirates' win over SFU. Honorable Mention: John Nossler (Linfield, WR) caught five classes for a career-high 121 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week: Jon Gleason (Linfield, Sr., LB,) recorded 21 tackles, including 18 primaries vs. SOU. Honorable Mention: Sky Blake (Whitworth, DE) recorded both of Whitworth's sacks for 15 yards.
Sept. 11
Offensive Player of the Week: Anthony Hicks (PLU, Sr., RB, Tumwater, WA) carried the ball 22 times for 122 yards and three touchdowns in the Lutes' win at Cal Lutheran. He also caught 3 passes for 42 yards. Honorable Mention: Curt Musser (Linfield, Jr., QB) completed 15 of 20 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. . . Ivan Gustafson (Whitworth, Sr., TE) caught nine passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Week: Bruce Assily (Linfield, Sr., LB, Honolulu, HI) recorded 8 tackles, including 1.5 sacks as the Wildcats opened the season with a shut out of Redlands. Honorable Mention: Aaron Lawson (Willamette, Sr., DE) recorded six tackles, including 4 for losses of 40 yards (3 were sacks). . . Mitch Ellerd (Whitworth, Sr., LB) recorded 16 tackles and broke up a pass.
