Buese & Markelz Named NWC Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week

The Northwest Conference is proud to announce its Student-Athletes of the Week in Cross Country for the week of September 10th through September 16th.

Women’s Cross Country - Student-Athlete of the Week
Riley Buese I Lewis & Clark | SR | Denver, Colo. | Northfield

Buese earned her second collegiate cross country victory by dominating the field on Friday at the Ash Creek Collegiate Invite. The senior finished nearly 45 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher to earn her first career regular-season cross country win. She completed the 5K course in 17:58.63. The individual victory helped Lewis & Clark College women's cross country post their first team win since September 1, 2017, as the Pioneers held off six other teams including Willamette, Pacific and DII host Western Oregon University. 

 

Men’s Cross Country - Student-Athlete of the Week
Evan Markelz I Lewis & Clark | SO | Mountain View, Calif. | Mountain View

Markelz earned his first collegiate cross country victory on Friday to lead Lewis & Clark at the Ash Creek Collegiate Invite. The sophomore became the first  Pioneers men's runner to win a cross country race since August 31, 2018. He finished nearly 27 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Western Oregon when he crossed the line in a PR time of 18:01.85. As a team, Lewis & Clark nearly won the team title, finishing in second (31 points) behind only host Western Oregon (28 points).
