HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference is proud to announce Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of August 27th to September 2nd.

NWC Men's Cross Country, 9/3

Men’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week – Colin Monaghan, Puget Sound (So.)

Monaghan (Puyallup, Wash.), the reigning NWC Freshman and Runner of the Year, finished first out of 43 participants at the Puget Sound Invitational. He recorded a time of 24:32.91.

Women’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week – Hannah Berdahl, Pacific (Ore.) (So.)

Berdahl (Forest Grove, Ore.) led the women's race with an impressive second place finish overall and first among Division III competitors, clocking 15:49.70 for the 4k race. Berdahl led the Boxers to a second place overall finish, first among the NCAA Division III teams.

Men’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Nicholas Ballenger, Willamette (Sr., F)

Ballenger (Salem, Ore.) scored a goal in each game as Willamette defeated Howard Payne (Texas), 4-0, and tied #9-ranked Trinity (Texas), 1-1 in 2 overtimes, during the weekend. Ballenger scored against Trinity for a 1-0 lead on a 52-yard shot over the goalkeeper on a counter-attack on Sunday. Against Howard Payne the night before, Ballenger scored Willamette's second goal just 2:36 into the second half. Ballenger took 5 shots against Howard Payne and 2 shots against Trinity.

Men’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Yushiro Shiyomi, Willamette (So., D)

Shiyomi (Kyoto, Japan) was a strong defensive component for the Bearcats, helping the team tie #9-ranked Trinity University (Texas), 1-1 in 2 overtimes. Trinity, a traditional national power, scored its only goal on a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Willamette earned a 0.45 team goals against average during the week.

Women’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week –  Maggee Hodgdon, George Fox (So., F)

Hodgdon (Newberg, Ore.) scored twice against nationally 15th-ranked Hope College as the Bruins tied the Dutch, 2-2.

NWC Women's Soccer Defensive, 9/3

Women’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Isabelle Arends, Whitworth (Jr., GK)

Arends (Monroe, Wash.) played the first half of both matches this weekend and did not allow a goal. She also played the 4:51 of overtime against Hamline to earn the win. She made four total saves with a 0.00 goals-against average.

NWC Volleyball Offensive, 9/3

Volleyball Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Danielle Skibiel, Pacific Lutheran (Sr., MB)

Skibiel (Snohomish, Wash.) averaged 3.0 kills per set and 1.15 blocks per set over the weekend, helping the Lutes go 4-0 and drop just one set the entire weekend. She recorded a tournament high 15 kills in a 3-1 win over Rose-Hulman.

NWC Volleyball Defensive, 9/3

Volleyball Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Kiana Vandaele, Whitworth (Jr., DS)

Vandaele (Makawao, Hawaii) made a strong debut as Whitworth's starting libero. She averaged 4.60 digs per set and also added six service aces (0.40 per set) as the Pirates went 3-1 on the weekend.
